Topic/Skill: Review of Basic Verb Tenses

Teacher Presentation:  I observed Dr. Rios' Grammar class on Friday, February 28 from 9:00am to 10:40am. First, Dr. Rios briefly presented the simple present tense and then asked students to explain aspects of the tense and give examples.

After some discussion and group work, students were asked to complete a review activity with a specific time limit. Afterwards, the students presented the sentences they wrote, and Dr. Rios gave feedback.

Next, Dr. Rios moved to the simple past tense. Students gave examples of irregular verbs, and Dr. Rios corrected pronunciation errors. Students were provided with a video about Mr. Bean and asked to write 5 sentences about what happened in the story.

After a break, Dr. Rios asked the students to explain the simple future tense and filled in the gaps they missed. He provided useful examples for the different uses of the simple future tense, using terms and ideas that would be familiar with the students. He also talked about contractions, and the proper times to use them, as well as some ideas about setting a personal goal for your English learning.

Classroom Management: When students did not want to speak, Dr. Rios did not interrupt the silence. He used humor to engage the students and make them feel comfortable and encouraged them when they did well.

He asked lots of questions, which forced students to pay attention and create new sentences to communicate. At the beginning of class and during individual work, Dr. Rios played music. When students seemed stuck during individual work, Dr. Rios encouraged them but did not give assistance, so they would have to continue working on their own.

Materials: Worksheets for students, whiteboard

Student Participation: Dr. Rios asked students to give examples, and explicitly asked students who were quiet, to make sure they understood the material.  Students asked lots of questions and gave examples—they seemed very willing to participate in class. They had individual practice assignments as well as partner work—for example, students made predictions about their partner’s life in a conversation, while Dr. Rios corrected their speech.

Feedback Provided: Dr. Rios would correct students’ pronunciation and accuracy when they spoke or read sentences they wrote. He would tell them how to properly pronounce the word or write it out on the board.

Lesson(s) on teaching you learned: I learned about how EFL teachers present grammar and make corrections to student’s work, either verbally or in writing.
