Topic/Skill: Reading (Beginner)
Teacher Presentation: Mr. Flemming opened class by introducing the syllabus and plan for the whole session. He explained the grading policy and class expectations to students. He spoke clearly and slowly, as the students in this course are just beginning to learn English. The class was split into two groups (1 and 2) based on the students' levels.
Next, Mr. Flemming asked students to discuss some questions about music. This was a prelude to an article about traditional Nigerian music. Students took time to read the article, occasionally asking questions about new vocabulary.
Classroom Management: Mr. Flemming asked students questions, rather than just explaining things immediately. When students were interested in a topic, Mr. Flemming would take a few minutes to explore it and teach related vocabulary.
Materials: Canvas, whiteboard, laptops
Student Participation: Students asked lots of questions about words and concepts they didn't understand, like "drums" and "Spring Break." Students spoke about different types of music they enjoyed. They seemed to like the activity, as they got to speak about things that interested them and learn more about their classmates.
Feedback Provided: Mr. Flemming provided explanations of new vocabulary using simpler words. He also encouraged students for their examples and did minimal correction of their grammatical mistakes.
Lesson(s) on teaching you learned: I learned about how to talk to lower-level students and explain concepts to them in a way that they will understand and keep them interested.
