Dr. Felicia Ciappetta  Teacher   presentation : Allergies   Classroom   management : The class was well paced and Dr. Ciappetta opened up with casual conversation before moving on to their lesson. They each took time to read the article within small groups Materials : A worksheet of an article about peanut allergies which the students could edit. There were also questions related to the article that the students had to be able to answer.  Student   participation : Each student were asked to answer questions from Dr. Ciappetta about the article and she would ask questions for schema building, asking about allergies that we may have  Feedback : Dr. Ciappetta would add feedback verbally as the students answered questions   Lessons : Reading comprehension

Perfect continuous tenses  Classroom   management : The class was well paced and Dr. Ciappetta opened up with casual conversation before moving on to their lesson. Materials : Shared Google Docs, each assigned to each student where they would work on fill-in-the-blank worksheets.  Student   participation : Each student worked on their Google Doc while the instructor checked in Feedback : Dr. Ciappetta would add feedback through comments if their answers were incorrect  Lessons : Grammar. How to write a thesis statement and support it.  Classroom   management : The class was mostly independent as they worked on their essays using a template provided by the instructor.  Materials : A printed essay help sheet  Student   participation : Each student worked independently to write their essay topic and periodically would ask the instructor for feedback.  Feedback : Feedback on their writing such as repeating phrases.  Lessons : Thesis statements in essay writing

Date : May 13, 2025 Location : Zoom  Topic : Speaking: Mother's Day  Feedback : Some help with certain words and gave vocab such as maternal instinct, generational gap, and nurturing  Lesson : We discussed the US holiday of Mother's Day and the similar holidays in South Korea such as Parent's Day and Children's Day

Date : May 7th, 2025 Location : In-Person Topic : Listening: Sports  Feedback : Some word errors and had to re-listen several times Lesson : Using the same website we worked on listening while also discussing the activity and discussed which sports are popular in our countries 

Date : April 29, 2025 Location : Zoom Topic : Speaking Feedback : None Lesson : We spoke about politics, given the political situation of both the US and South Korea and we discussed the differences

Date : April 23, 2025 Location : In-Person Topic : Speaking: Hobbies Feedback : Some word errors and mispronunciations Lesson : We discussed hobbies that we had in the past, present, and hobbies we wish to try in the future in order to work on tenses. 

Date : April 22, 2025 Location : Zoom  Topic : Speaking: The Superbowl in the US Feedback : N/A Lesson : We discussed the cultural phenomena that is the Superbowl and talked about the differences in fan culture in the US versus in South Korea

Date : April 21, 2025 Location : In-Person Topic : Speaking: Differences in culture Feedback : Some word errors and mispronunciations Lesson : We focused on just pure conversation to work on his speaking skills

Date: 5/5/25 Location: CIES Topic: Speaking Feedback: I provided feedback on how to phrase things more naturally. Lessons: Students struggle to construct sentences like native speakers. Also, if the student does not use the language for a while, it takes a little while for it to refresh.

Date: 5/5/25 Location: CIES Topic: Speaking Feedback: I provided feedback on different vocabulary terms related to the amusement park like rides. Lessons: niche vocabulary are difficult for the students to remember.

  Kieran TS #18 Date/Time: May 2, 2025 at 3:00pm Location: Strozier Topic/Skill: Summer Plans / Goodbyes! Feedback provided to the tutee:  In this meeting, Dauren and I discussed our respective plans for the summer. He got a job offer on campus, and we talked about what that will be like. Finally, we said our farewells and wished each other the best in the future. We promised to stay in touch.  Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: Dauren showed real improvement over the course of the semester, particularly in his public speaking and presentation abilities. He has the confidence to communication, which is perhaps the most important thing to have.  Note: Tutoring sessions #19 and #20 are with Jordan Poveda. 

  Kieran TS #17 Date/Time: May 2, 2025 at 2:45pm Location: Strozier Topic/Skill: Advising Feedback provided to the tutee:  In this meeting, Dauren and I finalized his schedule for the Fall and talked about his expectations for the classes. He was concerned about taking a fully online class, so I helped him understand how that type of class is different.  Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: Dauren is concerned about his future course load, which I imagine is made more difficult by the language barrier. 

  Kieran TS #16 Date/Time: April 28, 2025 at 3:30 pm Location: Strozier Topic/Skill: Canada Trip Feedback provided to the tutee:  In this meeting, Dauren revealed that he won a grant to travel to Canada, so we reviewed his letter together and discussed the requirements. Unfortunately, due to travel restrictions/dangers, his program advised him not to go. Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: Despite his advanced level, Dauren uses a lot of translation aids when reading important documents, so he must be not totally confident in his ability. 

Kieran TS #15 Date/Time: April 28, 2025 at 2:45pm Location: Strozier Topic/Skill: Presentation Practice Feedback provided to the tutee:  In this meeting, Dauren practicing give a final presentation for one of his classes. We reviewed his pronunciation of difficult words, and made notes to help him during the presentation. Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: Dauren does not mind public speaking, but his pronunciation becomes more unclear and stilted while giving a presentation, likely due to nerves. 

  Kieran TS #14 Date/Time: April 25, 2025 at 3:00pm Location: Strozier Topic/Skill: Advising and classes Feedback provided to the tutee:  In this meeting, I helped Dauren understand his requirements for registering for classes, and we discussed which classes he would be most interested in, and why.  Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: Simple activities, like finding the registration button on myFSU, are made significantly more difficult by the language/experience/cultural barrier. 

Kieran TS #13 Date/Time: April 22, 2025 at 3:00pm Location: Strozier Topic/Skill: Presentation Practice Feedback provided to the tutee:  In this meeting, Dauren practiced his class presentation and I provided feedback on his writing, slides, and pronunciation.  Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: Having a script or notecards helps a ESL speaker say complicated words much more easily.

  Kieran TS #12 Date/Time: April 18, 2025 at 3:00pm Location: Strozier Topic/Skill: Check-In Feedback provided to the tutee: In this meeting, Dauren and I discussed his vacation and work plans for the summer semester.  Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: It is difficult to correct someone's errors when having a conversation, as it disrupts flow and feels rude, but it is still important.

Kieran TS #10 Date/Time: April 11, 2025 at 4:00pm Location: Strozier Topic/Skill: Catch-Up Feedback provided to the tutee: Dauren was very tired during this meeting, so we had a casual conversation about his goals for school and how his classes were going. I corrected his errors, but that was all.  Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: It is hard to learn or speak a second language when very tired or overwhelmed. 

  Kieran TS #9 Date/Time: April 8, 2025 at 2:45pm Location: Strozier Topic/Skill: Presentation review Feedback provided to the tutee:  In this meeting, Dauren practiced a class presentation, and I provided feedback on his pronunciation. We then practiced the words he struggled with. Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: Dauren struggled with the inconsistency of English pronunciation, particularly J/G. 

Kieran TS #8 Date/Time: April 4, 2025 at 4:15pm Location: Strozier Topic/Skill: Cover Letters Feedback provided to the tutee:  In this meeting, I helped Dauren write a cover letter and corrected his errors.  Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: It is hard to explain how to strike the right tone while writing. Examples are necessary.

Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: Things like resume conventions are not universal between cultures. 

   Kieran TS #6 Date/Time: March 28, 2025 at 3:00pm Location: Strozier Topic/Skill: Interviewing Feedback provided to the tutee:  In this meeting, Dauren and I discussed interviewing tips and common questions.  Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: Even for advanced speakers, it is hard to answer complex questions on the spot, such as ones often heard in an interview. 

  Kieran TS #20 Date/Time: April 2, 2025 at 3:00pm Location: Strozier Topic/Skill: Spring Break Activities Feedback provided to the tutee: I met with Jordan again during this meeting. We discussed our Spring Break activities, and I helped him with some questions he had about his homework. Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I learned more about Jordan's hobbies. Note: Unexpectedly, this was my last meeting with Jordan, as he soon after said he could not complete more tutoring sessions. I am still not sure what happened with him.
